Newsletter October 2018

Dates for your diary and more, including inset days and flu vaccinations.

It is lovely to see that all of our children have settled into the new school year so well.  They are all looking refreshed after the summer break and look very smart in their new school uniforms.  I would like to welcome all of our new pupils – some who have joined us from other areas – our children have welcomed them really well, which is a credit to all.

School Closure – Friday 5th October 2018

We have received confirmation of closure of the school on Friday October 5 2018 – due to the Giants’ visit to New Brighton on that day.  The Director of Wirral Council has agreed a forced closure for our school due to the close vicinity of the Giants’ spectacular, which will result in road closures around our area and so make it difficult for both staff and pupils to get into school on that day.  The details of the route were announced last week and can be found  here

The school photographer will be visiting school on Friday 12th October to take individual portraits.

Flu Immunisation

All children in F2/Y1/Y2/Y3/Y4 & Y5 have been offered flu vaccination in the form of nasal spray.  Please return your consent forms if you have not done so already.  The NHS team will be in to deliver the vaccinations on Monday 15th October.

Water Bottles

As you are aware, we encourage pupils to drink water during the school day and we have a number of water machines where children can refill their water drinking bottles.  We have a new stock of recommended water drinking bottles which can be purchased from the school office or the tuck shop for £1.

Pupils’ Journey Home – Year 5 & 6 only

We are in the process of compiling an up-to date list of pupils in key stage two who have parents’ consent to make their own way home alone.  This will be particularly relevant in the coming weeks when the evenings become darker.  If you wish to make any changes to your current arrangement, please obtain a consent form from the school office.

Y6 Secondary Transfer

It is crucial that parents of Y6 pupils complete their preferences on time.  Parents are advised to go online at: to complete the preference forms for secondary school next September – the closing date is 31st October 2018.

School Meals

May we remind parents for those pupils who have now moved up to Year 3 and above that dinner money is to be paid in advance or on the day (£2.30 per day).

Communication with Parents

As you will be aware, we inform parents when there has been a bump to the head during break time, however minor.  We will continue to use our texting service to make the courtesy call.  Please be assured that parents will be contacted by phone if the injury is thought to be of a more serious nature.

Please ensure your email addresses are updated in particular, as we intend to enable our Parent Portal which will allow us to distribute newsletters and request consents by email in future. To inform us of your email address, please email with the subject: Parent Portal and in the body of the email list your child’s name and class.

Pupil Premium and Free School Meals

All children in Reception (F2), Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a universal free school meal automatically (no application necessary).  Older children can still qualify for a free meal depending on their parent or carer receiving certain benefits.  School is entitled to funding for each child who is registered for a free school meal or the Pupil Premium.

Parents or guardians are entitled to get free school meals if they receive:

  • Income support, or
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance, or
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit, or
  • Child Tax Credit with a total annual taxable income of less that £16,190 and are NOT receiving Working Tax Credit, or
  • Have successfully obtained asylum status, or
  • People who claim income related Employment and Support Allowance, or
  • Universal Credit.

Further information and online application form is available here.  You can also apply by phone on 0151 606 2002.  The caller will need details of their (and their partner’s, if applicable) name, address, date of birth, national insurance number, qualifying benefit and school details for their children.
